Joe Fontana Named Miami Beach’s First Honorary Commissioner of Miami Beach

Long time activist, Joe Fontana, passed away Sept 3 in the early morning with his priest by his side. The funeral, held Thursday at St Joseph’s Church were the Miami Beach City’s Commissioners, City Manager, City Attorney, numerous City department heads and a long list of the city’s movers and shakers attended the funeral to pay their respects to the City’s most active and vocal mover and shaker. Leader of the Republican Club, Founder of the Miami Beach Condominium and Homeowners Alliance, President of the Teen Job Corps, an usher at St. Joseph’s Church and busy campaigning for Michael Gongora, just to name a few things he dealt with daily, Joe was an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. In the 90s, Joe spearheaded the campaign to build the North Shore Youth Center and chaired the Oversight Committee of the project, inspecting every screw and corner of the building. Now, thanks to Joseph’s consistent persistence the Youth Center now proudly stands in North Shore Park on 72 Street since 2005, serving hundreds of children every day and the community with an open door.
Commissioner Michael Gongora read a proclamation during the funeral service, proclaiming Joe Miami Beach’s first Honorary Commissioner. A two time commission candidate, Joseph’s sister Lee Bobrow, proudly received the proclamation. Always staying on top of issues, Joe hardly ever missed a Commission meeting, sitting in the same seat all the time. When people needed to get things done, they called Joe for his help. Joe will be remembered as a doer and a fighter for the causes he believed in and standing firmly against those he did not. He will truly be missed and his spirit will serve as an inspiration for many.
Joe will be buried in New York at St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, NY. Hess Miller Funeral Home, 64-19 Metropolitan Avenue, Middle Village, NY 11379 (718-821-6660) will be handling the burial.
